FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you mobilise globally?2025-11-10T09:01:22+00:00

For planned work we can mobilise anywhere in the world with three weeks’ notice. For emergency work we move much faster. In one recent case, we were contacted on a Thursday, mobilised to Germany, and delivered the full point cloud by the following Friday.

How does high-quality scanning reduce risk during yard work or retrofit?2025-11-10T09:01:36+00:00

Poor scan data leads to incorrect envelope assumptions, missed obstructions and tie-in clashes — which become expensive once the vessel is in the yard. High-accuracy scanning gives engineering teams complete spatial certainty from the start, allowing design validation before steel is cut. This helps avoid costly rework, delays and change orders in dry-dock.

What deliverables do you provide after scanning?2025-11-10T09:02:06+00:00

We provide fully registered point clouds, cleaned meshes, and if needed, direct engineering-ready conversion files. All delivered as .E57 files. We can also deliver the scan as a navigable digital twin through Mari-Twin, enabling wider access for teams outside engineering (crew, HSEQ, operations, planners and more).

The yard says they don’t need scanning — so why should we still do it?2025-11-10T09:02:17+00:00

Yards often work from their own measurements and assumptions, which may not fully align with your engineering intent or risk tolerance. When you enter the yard without your own verified scan, you are relying entirely on their interpretation of the space. If clashes or access issues are discovered later, change orders and delays are on your account — not theirs. Scanning with Ataris gives you independent spatial certainty before steel is cut or contracts escalate. It ensures you walk into the yard with clarity, leverage and control over outcomes.

We already use a scanning provider — why would we switch to Ataris?2025-11-10T09:02:29+00:00

Most scanning companies can capture data. Very few understand maritime complexity, yard tolerances, refit risk and engineering workflows. Ataris works backwards from your engineering and yard requirements and scans with project outcomes in mind — not just geometry. That’s the difference between a scan that is simply “usable” and one that actively prevents delays.

How does pricing compare to standard scanning providers?2025-11-10T09:02:41+00:00

We’re rarely the cheapest upfront — and we don’t aim to be. Our clients work on projects where a single design clash, incorrect tie-in, or yard delay can cost more than the entire scan. We price based on accuracy, certainty and project protection. In most cases, a cheaper scan becomes expensive later.

Can you scan a vessel while it’s operational or at sea?2025-11-10T09:02:52+00:00

Yes! We do this regularly. In many cases scanning at sea is easier because there is less foot traffic and equipment movement compared to busy yard conditions. We follow established workflows for live vessel environments, coordinating with crew schedules to minimise disruption to operations.

Can you work alongside our existing engineering or design teams?2025-11-10T09:03:04+00:00

Yes. Most of our scans support either external engineering firms or in-house technical departments. We align our deliverables with the exact format, tolerance and downstream software requirements your teams use — ensuring there are no conversion issues or data gaps after capture.
